Letter to the Editor from the Toronto Star

Kind of disappointed by the lack of comments made for my last two posts... oh well. Maybe this one will stir up some discussion.
I found this in the Toronto Star this morning in the sports editorials.
The Lockout Song
sung to the tune of Stompin' Tom Connor's Hockey Song...
Hello out there, does anybody care, there's no hockey on tonight
Tension grows, the fans all know, hockey's on thin ice
Bettman sneers, Goodenow jeers and the fans all go insane
Someone roars, "Nobody scores" when there is no hockey game.
Oh, the good old hockey game, was the best game you could name
And the best game you could name was the good old hockey game.
Second period...
With bags of cash, the players dashed, and left the fans behind
Neither side is giving in, the fans know they crossed the line
With both sides entrenched, the season flickering out like a flame
They reject the fans that pay the bills, and look to each other for blame
Oh, the good old hockey game, was the best game you could name
And the best game you could name, was the good old hockey game
Third period...
Last chance for a season, but unlikely
Take me where, fans come first, and join in with a drink
Instead the Stanley Cup is all filled up and rusting by the rink
With final words, from both the nerd, the NHL goes out like a flame
The fans get mad and walk away from the good old hockey game
Oh, the good old football game, is the best game you could name
And the best game you could name, is the good old football game.
LOL - when I read that, I laughed out loud! The Good old hockey game is one of my fav. songs!!! And this new version is SO true. I read this morning that the New England/Pittsburgh game drew 27% more viewers than last year's late game (on Global...). And the Philly/Atlanta game was up 2% over last year's conference game.
When football season is over, I'm going to be SO depressed....
GO PATS GO!!!

(Read post below this one first...)

If you read my previous post first, this will make more sense...
These facts are unbelievable.
  • 1 billion people cannot satisfy even their elementary needs
  • Among the 4.5 billion residents of the developing countries, a third have no access to drinkable water and one fifth have no use of sanitary and medical services
  • 2.4 billion people are without access to basic sanitation
  • 24 million people are living with HIV/AIDS
  • There are 854 million illiterate adults, 543 million of them women
  • One in five children spend less than five years in any form of schooling
  • 120 million people live on less than one dollar a day
  • 11 million children under the age of five are dying annually from preventable diseases
  • In Ethiopia, Burkina Faso, Mozambique, Burundi, Niger, and Sierra Leone the life expectancy ages are 43, 46, 39, 40, 45, and 38 respectively - just think, statistically, how many of you would be orphaned? How many of you would be "middle aged"?

I could go on and on with stats.

Here's the kicker...

  • The three richest men on the globe have private assets bigger than the combined national product of the 48 poorest countries!
  • The fortune of the fifteen richest persons exceeds the total product of the whole of sub-Saharan Africa!
  • Less than 4% of the personal wealth of the 225 richest people would suffice to offer all the poor of the world access to elementary medical and educational amenities, as well as adequate nutrition.

Does this make you angry? It makes me angry... Why doesn't anything change???

Because we and others don't want to give up our comfy lives to save millions of people.

I love my global studies class. The only thing is, it angers me to see how some of the people in my class aren't even aware of what goes on in the world. My professor said it nicely - "We're all aware of the lip-synching (spelling???) incident with... what's her name? Oh yeah, Ashlee Simpson. She seems like a decent girl... but who's heard of the Millenium Development Goals?" It's so true! Everyone seems to be so caught up in things like the Brad and Jen break up (which I've just heard about by the way - I'm a loser =P) and other entertainment news that we are just ignorant to other (more important...) things that happen in the world. For those of you not aware of these Millenium Development Goals, there was a gathering in September 2000 to make up this Millenium Declaration. Its purpose is to erase poverty, promote education, combat HIV/AIDS, etc. The Millenium Declaration was adopted by 189 countries... I really encourage you to look into it. The sad thing is, not alot of people have heard of these goals and I believe countries who signed on and promised to help aren't actually doing so...
Post and let me know what y'all think of this!

This weekend was pretty good. I was the weekend host @ Camp. I got a lot of reading done for school. Who would have thought - two weeks into school and I was already so behind. Though I'm caught up now, I know that by this coming weekend, I'll be in the same situation again... especially if I keep spending so much time on this blasted computer!
And, who would have guessed that only two weeks into school, I'd be this stressed out already? I've already been given dates for all my midterms and papers due this term... they all happen to be around the same days. So many times I have two midterms or two papers on the same day or a day after each other. Plus the whole thing about wondering where to live next year... Chances are really good that I'm living with Constance and Laurel next year (MUAH! girls!!! =D) but the whole signing the lease and all the legal stuff really freaks me out...
Good news - GOING TO CALIFORNIA FOR READING BREAK! I'm so excited. I have family there that my brother and I are going to be staying with. I've never been to the West coast before - never seen the Pacific so it should be a blast. Even though it'll be February and pretty cold, I'm going to make myself go swimming in the ocean at least once =P Family I'm staying with live like 15 minutes away from the beach - sweet deal eh? Who knows, maybe meet someone special in sunny (or at least I hope sunny...) California... I've been watching too much of The O.C.!

I'm so pathetic...

O.K. I barely have a social life here in Waterloo... My social life consists of the friends I have on my floor and their friends. I barely have any friends outside of that. *sob* As most of you know, I am a football nut, fanatic, whatever you want to call it! So yesterday I watched the wild card games. For 8 hours. By myself. All I want is a football buddy!!!
Anyways, off to watch more football - YAY! If anyone wants to join me... message me!!! Go Packs and Colts!!!

GO CANADA GO!!!!

SO excited for the hockey game tonight! For those of you not watching it, cancel ALL your plans, sit in front of the t.v., and cheer on Canada as they take down the Russians! They better do it... The past six years Canada has only managed to get bronzes and silvers. Most of the time to the Russians and the Americans...
This term is going to be good I think... I'm going to try to get involved more. And I'm definately staying here in Waterloo more weekends.
Ok everyone - you HAVE to check this out!!!!http://www.femalefirst.co.uk/celebrity/19922004.htm Does she realize that the show is nothing like the profession?! Brittany Spears drives me crazy...
Anyways, peace out! I'm going to go get ready for the game! GO CANADA

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

I posted a Christmas blog last week but it's not showing up... So, I'll just post a joint "Merry Christmas" and "Happy New Year" blog =)
I hope your Christmas was blessed! I hope those of you who had to go through this season without a loved one were comforted. And I hope all of you kept in mind the real reason of Christmas!
Now... may the year ahead be full of surprises (good ones of course...) and laughter for all! I hope your New Year's eve was a blast - mine could have been better (a whole lot better....).
Going back to campus tomorrow =( I wish the Christmas break was longer, but oh well. This term I'm really going to focus on my studying to distract me from all the other crap going on in my life. I'm really going through a tough time right now, so any encouragement would be greatly appreciated....
God Bess you in this new year!
